In June 2009 Sharon Waring of Full Mash Brewery suffered multiple fractures to her spine in a riding accident.  After calling 999 the ambulance crew arrived only to find her injuries too severe to be transported on a 30 minute trip by road. The Air Ambulance was called and arrived on the scene in just 8 minutes. She received on the scene treatment and was then transported to The Royal Derby Hospital all in the space of 15 minutes.

The DLRAA use the Augusta Grand 109 helicopter which provides a smooth flight and low vibrations; key attributes when transporting people with spinal injuries. To learn more about the DLRAA click on the link above.

Sharon underwent emergency surgery to her spine and spent 38 days in The Royal Derby Hospital. Sharon has since made a full recovery and was invited to the helicopter base where she met the crew who came to her rescue. It was here that she discovered that the DLRAA was a charity organisation.

Sharon became an official volunteer and helps with various fundraising activities and events. Her connection with Full Mash Brewery could only lead to one thing – a beer brewed specially for the DLRAA. The idea was passed on to friends and after receiving a barrage of names such as: Aley copter fuel, Whirlybird, HemsAle and AVGAS. Eventually the name Chopper Fuel was elected for the beer. The brewery will be donating 10 pence for every pint sold to the Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance (DLRAA). Full Mash Brewery have estimated that £100 per brew will be donated and hope to raise more than £1000 by the end of the year.

The beer “Chopper Fuel" will be pale in colour at 3.8% abv. It will be brewed using a new technique that results in a beer that is very smooth but still packed with body and hop flavours. A combination of Willamette and Brewers Gold hops will give the beer gentle bitterness and hop aromas. The fermentation will use two yeast strains blended to provide a unique flavour profile.
